140 Harley Street,January 3rd,1912

Dear Dr.Sun Yat Sen,

We are so rejoiced over your magnificent welcome to China, & that at last after all these years, you have attained the success you so much have deserved & the intense gratitude of the millions of your people who will now be free from the terrible condition they have lived in for the past half a century.God has granted you your desire, now we pray he may uphold you for the tremendous task you have before you.No man has ever had a greater, but we feel you are able for it & rejoice exceedingly.Everyone here is beginning to speak to us about you with more ease. They feel more free, for at first your advent succeed to stun them completely. The world has laughed at the court of China so many years, that they could not contemplate the thought of losing that pleasure with equanimity. We, who have felt so strongly the sadness of it all, have never laughed.Nothing but sympathy has been in our hearts. When you were able to convince us that the present government must go, we have upheld you ever since as we know your wisdom & knowledge could not be at fault.

I only hope now that Yuan Shik-Kai will be wise & help you, & that—the Imperialists will go to their quarters & that without anymore bloodshed, China will unite & will become most happy & prosperous.

Our great interest will be to see your new cabinet. There are such able men in China, that now that they can speak you should have no trouble.

We get people in here constantly desiring us to introduce them to your notice.I enclose a gentleman's card Mr.Hallican, who desires a concession for electrics lighting. He is to be trusted & intends to go to China soon & to see you if he can.

Another man is a tailor & wants a card of introduction so that he may make you clothes. But needless to see we put the most of them off with one excuse or another.

A new happy new year.We are so glad that your new era is to be our January 1st.It was such an auspicious day.We are thinking of sending you a telegram & indeed I went on the 1st of January to send you one.But then I feared you would not get it because we were not sure of your address. Now we shall send it to Nanking.

Dr.Cantily, Colin, Neil & Kenneth join me in affectionate regards to you.May prosperity be ever with you.I think of your wife & children how thankful they will be.

You will be too busy now to come & see us soon again, but we shall always think of you.

Yours very sincerely,

Mabel Barclay Cantlie
