PRESIDENT AND TREASURER

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

504 Trust & Savings Blg.,Jan.6th, 1911

My dear Sir and Excellency:

The Associated Press dispatches announce your arrival in Shanghai, and your election as president of the New Republic. You do not need to be assured that this consumation was very agreeable news to me and I sent you a cable expressing my heartiest congratulations and best wishes for a happy and successful New Year.

A day or two later the associated press advised us of your going to Nanking and assuming the reign of government there.Another step in the fulfillment of your plans. The sentiment in the United States is very friendly to you, personally, and this association with you and this feeling has been enhanced by your most considerate proclamations.I have taken the liberty to encourage the press where ever I could, to speak favorably of the efforts of your party and there has been very little or no unfavorable criticisms.

It was announced a day or two ago that the Minister for China, at Washington, had vacated his post and proposed to retire to his home in China.

I have not heard from General Lea for some time, but was advised through one of your friends here that it was expected that he would accompany you on your homeward journey.I hope that his health, particularly the trouble with his eyes, which I understood was greatly improved, has permitted him to go with you, as I believe that he will be of much assistance to you in many ways.

I enclose a clipping from the evening paper here, which I think will be gratifying to you, indeed.I know that you will have many problems to solve and difficulties to overcome, but I feel the utmost confidence that you will be equal to the occasion at all times.

My family join me in every good wish for you and yours.

Very sincerely your friend,

C.B.Booth

P.S.I presume that before this reaches you, you will be joined by your son, Sun Fo.He wrote me a note stating he was on the way.

Dr.Sun Yat Sen,Nanking,China.
