My dear Mr.Sun：
The general sentiment of the missionary body of China is in favour of our Republican cause， except the two ex-missionaries， who are members of the International Institute.
Since I last saw you， I have had conversations with many missionaries and as far as I can learn the foreign powers will not interfere with our movements unless our troops injure foreign lives or property.
Enclosed here with please find an article written by Mr.J.W.Crofoot， an American missionary， residing in Shanghai， who expresses the general feeling of the missionary body of China.
I am coming to Nanking to see you and may I bring my daughter along with me， as she is very anxious to meet you and pay you her respects.I heard that a passport is needed in order to see you.In that case， will you please supply us with the necessary papers? I do not think it is possible for us to come up before the 24th of January， for she is getting up amateur theatricals， which will be presented on the night of the 23rd in a Chinese theatre; so her presence is needed in Shanghai as she has to conduct rehearsals everyday.The net result of the proceeds will go towards helping the military government.The plays will be presented in English and those who expect to take part were educated in the United States.This Undertaking is quite unique in character， and as such a performance is an entirely new feature even in Shanghai.The novelty of it， I think will not fail to attract both the Chinese and foreigners of this city.
My daughter was a member of the Dramatic Club when at her college and she did a great deal of what she terms “theatrical stunts” when abroad; but she never would take part in a play，he is even so classical， in Shanghai， for she felt that our people could not appreciate “art for art's sake”， so you could imagine how astonished I was when she announced her intention of organizing a musical concert and getting up a dramatic play or two.I tell you these things feeling that they will interesting you and give you joy to hear about the enthusiasm and ingenuity of the lady Republicans of our city.
