Honored Friend：
I trust that I shall not seem intrusive in taking the liberty of sending to you， in a personal and informal way， my warmest and most heartfelt congratulations on the mighty work God has led you， in His wonderful Providence， to accomplish for China.I have been greatly moved and my heart has been deeply stirred as I have considered how， from those early years in which we first became acquainted， you have been so nobly endeavoring to prepare yourself for the task which lay before you， and later to engage in active participation in the great Revolutionary Movement.Here our Chinese people， with many American friends， have followed your course with the most intense interest and deep sympathy.The dwellers in these pleasant islands， in the far away Pacific， will always hold you in loving remembrance， and will ever pray that God will keep you under His protecting care.
As I review the past， my only regret is， that I was not able to do more to cheer and help you in those long and weary years of your patient effort for the great work you were engaged in.My heart was always full of kindly sympathy and friendship for you， and I was glad to do what little I could， but now I feel I might have done so much more.I know， however， you will forgive me for not having been of more service to you.If ever I can be of any aid， in any humble way to you or your family， I trust you will allow me to show how sincere and loyal my sympathy and devotion are.
It has been a great pleasure to be much with your son， Mr.Sun Fo， during the last few weeks.He is a young man of great promise， and his quiet， modest manner， and earnest and manly spirit have made a deep impression upon all who have met him.I cannot but feel that a great and noble future lies before him.His mind is well trained， and he thinks earnestly upon the important and serious things of life.I trust it will be possible for him later on to resume his University studies and fit himself thoroughly for future usefulness.I have had much pleasure in introducing him to many of our leading people here.We called recently upon Governor Frear， Governor of this Territory.Your son was most cordially received by him， and I was pleased to see how easily and gracefully Sun Fo bore and conducted himself in the interview.We called later upon Queen Liliookalani， who was most happy to meet your son.Among our Chinese people he has borne himself with quiet and gentlemanly dignity.On the evening before he leaves for China a large international reception will be tended him here in Honolulu.
It has given Mrs.Damon and myself the utmost satisfaction to come very closely in touch with all our Chinese friends here in Hawaii of late in connection with efforts to raise funds for the Red Cross， in China， and in many other ways.After a long time of close and intimate touch with the Chinese， we have come to feel almost as if we were members of their race， rather than as if we belonged to different nationalities， and in a deep and emphatic sense has this seemed most true in the great and wonderful days through which we have been passing recently.
I feel that my duty is here now with the Chinese in Hawaii， to do what lies in my power to lead and guide them; otherwise， I would like to leave immediately for China and engage in the Red Cross work， and later in the cause of Education， I know， however， my duty is here， and my wife and self feel that in working for the Chinese here， we are working for China also.The wonderful possibilities for the development of China， the great country of which you are head， open out in wonderful vistas.The opportunities for the developing of this great people are almost overwhelming.May God guide and strengthen you to open new doors， through which the truth and light may come to them! Perhaps， some day you may be able to send some students to the Mid-Pacific Institute， of which I am President， which opens its doors in cordial welcome to representative of all races， but will ever have a special welcome for Chinese youth.
At a recent service at the Chinese Church (Fort Street， Honolulu)， when Sun Fo was present with us， the entire audience rose and remained standing， while our Chinese Pastor prayed for God's blessing to rest upon you.Our Christians send you their loyal greetings.
Mrs.Damon joins with me in sincerest expressions of respectful friendship to yourself， your honored wife， and to the young ladies of your family.Sun Fo will take our cordial Aloha to you all.I trust you will kindly excuse the liberty I have taken in writing so long a personal letter.It has sprung， however， from a sincere and earnest heart， filled with loyalty to you and the great cause you represent.Daily， our prayers will continue to ardent to God for your constant success and advancement.
