Dear Dr.Sun Yat-sen,
Whilst in London sometime ago I met a man who apparently was a friend of yours & talking to him about China, he among of settle things predicted fresh chances in its constitution in the near future, which apparently have now come to pass,& I am excitingly glad to see that peace exactly to believe your country & people have done a real good service to it & is about to revolutionize its foundations for the better.I am very interested in China & it has just break me whether I could get an appointment in it under your government in some of its departments where I am sure you would like to have the services of a man from home having views as yourself instead of a half civilized Manchu.
I know Sir Robert Hartwell when he was out there & wanted me to enter the Chinese Imperial Customs, but I did not care about leaving the old country at the time, so did not go for it.—I have however since seen something of the east during my travels in it, & as I came out here for the Delhi & am on my way and on a visit towards Shanghai.
I might drop you a line, & ask you if you could give me a place either in the police, Custom, Army or any other participant may like to keep an Englishman into.If however you would first care to see me with my credentials, I could call on you when in China & have a talk over the politics.
I am the son of a Cal & grandson of amajor-financial in the Architect area & come from an old English family of social respectability.I was educated at home & have had a thorough public school education, a good attitude & idea, a good shot & 29 years of age.I hold excellent testimonials & been quick in learning the language of a country, & a few of which already know.I have also seen some active service in various expeditions work when I was a volunteer.
I am registering this letter to rescure of its reaching you,& would like to have an answer before I leave here.
With all good wishes to you for your untiring energies.
Belive me,Yours truly,
H.L.Wintle
