My dear sir：
May I place at your disposal my services as a surgeon? If I can be of my service to the cause of the Republic， I shall be only too willing to give my services to the soldiers.
I have been sent by Harvard University of Boston U.S.A to organize the surgical department of the new Harvard United School of China， were being located at Shanghai; this is not a missionary project， merely a medical school for Chinese students.
As I have had several years of hospital experience in the United States， it would be a great pleasure for me to aid the Republic in whatever way I can medically and in the sanitary arrangements of camps and hospitals.Internally my services will be gratis to the Republic whose principles and efforts I admire and do trust will be successful.
American Consul-General Wilder and Judge Thogn of the American Court at Shanghai， may be requested for references.I should however， prefer this letter to be kept a secret， as I am professor of Surgery at the School and at St.John's Hospital for Chinese， and should be obliged to arrange for leave of absence from the school， if you should accept my services.
