To His Excellency Sun Yat Sen.
Your Excellency,
I have the honor to state that about two months ago, I was asked if I was willing to proceed to China to assist in organizing and drilling Republican forces.I replied that I should be willing and pleased to do so, but that for pecuniary reasons, I would be unable to leave Singapore without an advance of pay to enable me to settle my affairs, before leaving the Colony, and also to pay for my passage to post of destination.
I was subsequently informed that there would be no difficulty in this matter and requested to write an official application for employment to your Excellency. This I did and also forwarded a copy of my Record of Service in the British Army.I was told that these papers had been duly forwarded.A fortnight ago, I heard that every thing had been satisfactorily arranged, that it was only a matter of a few days and my services (and those of others)had been accepted.I now hear that no foreigners are required.
In case my Record of Service has not been received, I would state that I was for 17.5 years in the British Army and served in two campaigns.
I enclose a letter of introduction which I regret being unable personally to present.
I need scarcely say that if employed, I will do my utmost to render loyal service.
Apologizing for troubling you and trusting to receive a favorable reply.
I have the honor to be Your Excellency's obedient servant.
