My dear Friend，
So long a time has gone by without hearing from each other that I fear that this letter will surprise you.
For almost over 15 years we did not meet with each other， since after departure from Hongkong.I have occasionally heard some accounts of yours， but have never been successful in putting myself into communication with you， for no one， whom I know of in this country， can give your address.
You may imagine how happy I was when Reuters announced the success of General Li Yuen Hung and the extermination of Manchus in Wuchang.The happy feeling of Chinese down here is universal throughout， and in this town， all kinds of celebrations expressing people's happiness are becoming a common affair.
Indeed， I should think that you may be able to wind up the Manchu dynasty with less botherings and with greater rapidity， if Yuen Shih Kai had been trapped， when he was within Li Yuen Hung's reach.
For years， Yuen Shih Kai has been a dangerous element in the Chinese Empire， and is the bitterest enemy of mine.I spent over 5 years in the North with a view of gaining a good footing in the services of the Imperial Government and， as no offer could satisfy me， after having a thorough knowledge of the serious corruptions of the high Manchus， and the ways in which Yuen Shih Kai gained his honors and position made me so disgusted that I abandoned all ambitions of becoming a Chinese Official， and took over the Editorship of a Tientsin daily paper with which I thoroughly annoyed Yuen Shih Kai and the Manchus， before I came down here.
I have established myself here as miner and planter for over six years successfully.I am also general Manager of Mr.Loke Yew， a member of the Municipal Council and Accessor to the Supreme Court.I have a considerable knowledge of the British law， and full knowledge of the Chinese law， customs， habit of the Chinese officials and people of different provinces.
I think that， as I am still young， I may once more volunteer my services to China， seeing China is now for the Chinese， with an able Man like You as President of the Chinese Republic and your men administering the Government—all can be desired for China.
The fund raised from the town people here were remitted to Shanghai through the Selangor Chamber of Commerce and also a Mr.Wong Kat Seng of Singapore.
In the meanwhile， kindly let me know if anything here I can do for you.My cable address is given herein and my letter address “J.B.Hugh， Bentong， Pahang， F.M.S.” will do.
I hope to pay you a visit sometime in May， but if you wish me to come up sooner， you may cable me.

亲爱的朋友：
我们已经很长一段时间没有通信了，我恐怕这封信会令您觉得惊讶。
自离开香港后，我们已有15年多没有见面了。偶尔我听到一些关于您的情况，但总未能与您取得联系，因为我在马来亚认识的人中没人能告诉我您的地址。
您可以想象，看到路透社报道黎元洪将军成功推翻清王朝在武昌的统治，我是多么高兴。这个小镇的华侨人人兴高采烈，纷纷举行各种活动以示庆贺。
的确，我认为，如果黎元洪不失时机使袁世凯落网，就可以尽早一举捣毁清王朝。
多年来，袁世凯一直是中华帝国的一个危险人物，也是我的死对头。我抱着在帝国政府中站稳脚根的想法，在北方呆了5年多。由于没有合适的职位，我对清朝权贵的腐化堕落又有了透彻的了解，加上袁世凯为获取荣耀和地位，不择手段，令我非常反感，如此种种令我放弃了在中国政府当官的抱负，而在天津一家日报社成了编辑。因为报纸上的一些言论，我触怒了袁世凯和清政府。后来我就到了这里。
我成功在此站稳脚根，从事矿业和种植业达6年之久。我还是市政委员会成员、高等法院检查官陆佑的总经理。我对英国法律有相当认识，对中国法律、习俗和中国各省官员和百姓的习惯也有充分的了解。
我想，我还年轻，我可以重新到中国作些贡献。因为我看到中国现在是中国人自己的了，有您这样一位能人做总统，还有您的助手们管理政府事务——所有这些都是中国渴望的。
从当地居民处筹集的款项已经通过雪兰莪商会和新加坡的黄杰生先生汇往上海。
