Your Excellency，
I must apologize for trespassing on your valuable time at this juncture， but before leaving for Canton and South China generally， wish to have the honour of an interview in order to request letters of introduction to the new Directors of the Government Departments in Canton， such as the Mint， Arsenal and Railways.
My Company has the honor of supplying material to most of the principal Governments and I myself have had the pleasure of travelling throughout China during the last five years.
I shall be in Nanking on the 9th inst.for several days and shall feel highly honored if you can grant me an interview， however short， at your own convenience.
Kindly address your reply to me care The British Consul at Nanking， whom I have requested to retain any correspondence pending my arrival.
Trusting that Your Excellency will be able to accede to my request， and with many thanks in anticipation.
