My dear Mr.President：
First of all， let me express my heartfeit thanks to your noble self and to all the members of your cabinet， in the provisional government， that the issues of the great revolution have so far been of the most salutary character.
Down through the history of the China that is to be your name will shine as one of its worthies， and the affection of the millions for you will anger well for the message and call your sacrifice and toils have interpreted to the people.
The causes that lie at the base of， and which have， with such scientific certainty produced the present beginnings of the mightiest renaissance in Asia are not difficult of recognition.Liberty， equality， and fraternity is the best heritage of the people， and when these principles are vitalised in a life of devotion to country and service for the uplift of the masses， then it is that the seal and signet of God is seen upon it all.
When I was in Nanking a couple of weeks ago， and called， at the intimation of the enclosed letter， the president's office was the scene of the most important activities， in the matter of arranging with the northern crisis.So it was that I did not get the honor of a five minutes audience.But I was not in the least disappointed， but rather the more pleased， because the crisis seemed to be full of promise.
Now that the One Great Republic of China is established， and its recognition and place of capital assured， the Chinese all over this recently disturbed province are full of joy and peace.While we know that the processes of reconstruction will be long and hard， and full of serious problems， it is also sure indeed， that God will guide, sustain， and pilot to its haven this great ship of state and bring to its splendidly endowed， and surely awakening peoples， the highest blessings of prosperity and power.
Within a couple of weeks I shall be passing through Nanking， and shall be the guest for one night of my own missionary colleague， Dr.Macklin， and shall again take my chances， in a call， to enjoy the privilege of shaking hands and saying my sincerest “GOD BLESS YOU” to the first president of the great land where for twenty three years I have labored with pen， and voice， and prayers， to lift the people to the place where they will see the inheritance that is theirs， in their own right， and by the will of God.

尊敬的总统先生：
首先让我表达衷心的感谢，多亏您和您在临时政府的所有内阁成员，迄今为止，这场大革命在各方面都具有最有益的特色。
纵观中国历史，您的名字都堪称其中最闪耀的一个。数以百万的爱戴您的人将对这一消息感到愤怒，您所有的牺牲与辛劳已传达给人民。
不难发现，当前亚洲最强劲的复兴事业已开始，并具有科学的确定性。自由、平等、博爱是人类的最好遗产，当这些原则贯彻于一种献身国家和为提升民众而服务的生活时，这一切就是上帝的见证。
几周前当我在南京时，在随函所附的信中接到暗示，就安排北方危机事务而言，总统办公室是最重要的活动场所。因此我没能有幸亲临现场。但我并不失望，而是更高兴，因为危机似乎有望解决了。
现在，中国这个伟大的共和国的成立了，且获得承认，首都也确定了，还处于动荡省份的中国人都充满欢乐和安宁。虽然我们知道，重建的过程将是漫长而艰难的，充满严重问题，但也可以肯定，上帝将指引、维护和领航这艘伟大的船驶向她的庇护所，赋予其卓越的天赋，唤醒其人民，保佑其繁荣和强盛。
两周内我将路过南京，在传教同事玛克林博士家做客一晚，并将再一次有机会在拜访中享受与您握手的优待，向第一任总统您表示我最诚挚的祝福“上帝保佑”。我在这片伟大的土地上生活了23年，曾用笔、声音和祈祷，将人们提升到这样一种境地，那里他们将领略到基于他们自身权利，被上帝意志所决定的属于自己的传统。
