Allow me to write to you as a gentleman to another gentleman.
I have the great fortune to have met you in Nanking， but it is my great misfortune that fate made me beside myself during that meeting.I sincerely regret the incident at that time which caused my affront， though no intentional， to you first as an emancipator of the nation and second as political head of the country.The affront you have justly not forgiven.I beg to apologize for it.
I hope you would， considering the circumstance of the moment， temper your resentment with the thought that my conduct， though unpardonably brusque， was actuated by no disrespectful and no unmanly motive.
