Dear Sir，
Those who have any intimate knowledge of this century， know that a comprehensive system of railway communication is an absolute necessity.
Such a scheme was however impossible under the haphazard spasmodic management of the old regime， and it was not until the man who had materialised the dream of the revolution， offered himself for the second work， that there was any hope.
Dr.Sun knows as we all know that until China's remotest provinces are brought into direct， economical and quick communication with the seaboard and markets， they cannot develop， become prosperous or powerful.Isolated as they are always be centers of trouble and sources of weakness to the rest of the nation.
Everyone know this， and when Dr.Sun brought forward his scheme and offered himself for its consummation， everyone was glad and extended him their earnest wishes and hopes for his success.Societies of all sorts listened to Dr.Sun's views， and gave him promises of help.
All this applause lead one to believe that whilst this great man was giving his brains and life to the forwarding of his country's prosperity， his country men would at least， if they gave no help make no hindrance.
Instead however we find that four newspapers the representatives of one province， have combined to frustrate the propaganda， not because of any material or serious objection but because
“All the station masters will be Cantonese”
Surely in all history there have never been such an absurdly petty reason for attempting to wreak a great scheme.Surely Dr.Sun who has given his whole life to the liberation of China as a whole is not going to end it in aggrandizing his own fellow provincials.
If a Cantonese were station master in every station in the land there would be no objection， provided he were capable and honest.Under the old regime it was well known that the station master's job was one of the most lucrative on the whole railway and probably this is the reason why the Kiangsu papers are so envious.Surely they are condemned out of their own mouths.Don't they think that now China is entering upon a new era， an effort might be made to overcome the old habits， instead of fighting for the opportunity to carry them on.
Now that each individual Chinese has an interest in his government， and can help in the making or marring of it， can they not forget the old provincial differences.Amongst all the patriotic societies started，why should there not be one formed of men and women vowed to answer when ask their province， not I am from Kiangsu， or Yunnan but I am a Chinese.It would not take many people， and it would not take long to work this feeling into the people.Such a society will help greatly to the welding together of the race.
The Chinese are fond of quoting“Within the four seas all men are brothers”， why not live up to it?
We have been surfeited with advice of all sorts as to how to make China strong.Every effort will fall until that individual forgets to live merely for himself and lives for his country.The whole Chinese system of philosophy has hidden the nation by the province， the province by the village， and the village by the family， and human nature has made the further concentration of the family into self.
Every question is judged by its probable effect on self.We have heard of all sorts of schemes， vows， promises， and threats， some reaching the heroic， and others verging into hysterics.Its all talk talk talk.Before China can take a great place in the world， her people must learn to take all risks， recking nothing of their lives and fortunes， content to find their only reward in work well done.The race that knows this and practices it， will rule， whereas those who only live for the day， their own selfish interests and bellies， will be ruled.
If those Kiangsu papers would remember this， and impress it upon the people， and teach them to forget that there are Cantonese， Yunnanese and Szechuanese， but that all are Chinese， they would deserve better of their country， than they will if they prostitute their influence and power for the wrecking of a scheme so essential to the wellbeing and strength of their country， as Dr.Sun's is， because forsooth “All the station masters will be Cantonese”.

尊敬的先生：
凡对本世纪有任何深入了解的人都懂得，绝对必要建立一个综合的铁路通信系统。
然而，在旧政权的随意、断续的管理之下，这样的计划是不可能的，直到那个实现了革命梦想的人，主动投身于国家治理的事业，才有了希望。
孙博士知道，我们也都知道，除非中国最偏远的省份与沿海地区和市场进行直接、经济和快速的沟通，否则它们就无法发展、繁荣和强大。尽管它们与世隔绝，但始终是全国其他地区的动乱源头、弱点。
大家都明白这点。当孙博士提出自己的方案，并为其圆满成功贡献自己心血时，大家都很高兴，并对他的成功表达了诚挚祝福和期待。社会各界都听取了孙博士的意见，并向他承诺提供帮助。
所有这些掌声令人相信，当这位伟人为国家的繁荣而献出自己智慧与生命时，他的同胞，如果不提供帮助，至少不会有任何阻碍。
然而，我们发现四家报纸作为一个省的代表，反而联合起来阻挠宣传，不是因为任何重要的或严重的异议，而是由于“所有站长都是广东人”。
诚然，在所有历史中，从无这样以一个荒谬的理由来企图阻止实施一项伟大计划；诚然，孙博士将其一生奉献给解放作为一个整体的中国，就不会以任用同乡来搞垮它。
只要他有能力且诚实，每个铁路车站的站长都由广东人出任也未尝不可。众所周知，在旧政权下，站长职位是整个铁路最有利可图的工作之一，这可能就是江苏报纸如此羡慕的原因。他们必自打嘴巴。他们难道不认为，现在中国正进入一个新时代，应努力克服陋习，而非竭力争取把这些陋习坚持下去。
现在每个中国人都对自己的政府十分关注，都能帮助政府的建立或破坏，难道他们不能忘记省域分别吗？在所有成立的爱国团体中，为什么不结成一个由男女组成的共同体。他们发誓，当问及他们的省份时，要回答我是中国人，而不是我来自江苏或者云南。无须很多人，也无须很长时间，就能把这种感觉融入到人们的生活中。这样一个社会将大大有助于民族团结。
中国人喜欢引用“四海之内皆兄弟”的名言，为何不付诸实践呢？
关于如何使中国强大，我们已经收到了各种各样的建议。除非每个人忘记只为自己而活，而为国家而活，否则一切努力都会失败。整个中国以省隐国、以村隐省、以家隐村，人性进一步使家庭成为自我的中心。
每个问题是由自身可能的效应来判断的。我们听说过各种阴谋、誓言、承诺与威胁，有些达到英勇的境界，有的近乎歇斯底里。全是空谈、空谈、空谈。中国意欲在世界上拥有伟大地位，其人民必须学会承担一切风险，不计较自己的生命与运气，只满足于在出色的工作中寻求自己的唯一回报。知道这一点并实践这一点的种族将会统治他人，而那些只为一天而活、只为自己私利和肚子而活者，将会被统治。
如果江苏的报纸能记住这一点，并使人民铭记，教他们忘记有广东人、云南人和四川人，而大家都是中国人，他们应该得到更好的国家。这胜过他们因为确实“所有站长都是广东人”，而运用自己的影响和权力，破坏一个对国家福祉和强大如此重要的计划（如孙博士的计划）。
