The festival falls on May 5 of the lunar calendar. According to local custom, people will bathe themselves with the water boiled together with calamus and Asiatic wormwood to exorcise evil spirits; drink Realgar wine; dot a spot of cinnabar between the eyebrows of a kid to calm fright and exorcise evil spirits. All households stick calamus and Asiatic wormwood into the ground before their gates and offer rice dumplings (pyramid-shaped dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves) to god as sacrifice. The rice dumplings of Zhongshan differ from those of other places. For general rice dumplings, bamboo leaves are used to wrap up glutinous rice into a triangle;in Zhongshan, however, the leaves of Cowslip, a specialty local plant, are used to wrap up glutinous rice into a cylinder, which is known as "Cowslip Dumpling"that exudes a fragrance of Cowslip leaves.
