The festival falls on July 14 of the lunar festival when the villagers will make clothes with cut paper and then burn them as sacrifices to their ancestors. Married daughters will return to their parental home with gifts such as fish, duck and fruits. The 15th of July is commonly known as the "Ghost Festival". According to legend, in every July of the lunar calendar, thet Gate of Hell will be opened for one month to let out the ghosts in the nether world. That is why the villagers will place paper joss paper, cloth paper, candles, rice, tofu and sprouts as sacrifices to the loitering spiritsoutside the gates of their homes when dusk falls, which is commonly known as "burning street clothes". A few days before the festival, the villagers of the whole village will hold "Yu Lan Jiao" (chant Taoist scriptures to expiate the sins of the dead) outside the village to soothe the spirits.
