This is a farmer's family who used to live on overseas remittances. Cuiheng Village is a small hometown of overseas Chinese. When recalling his hometown, Sun Yat-sen said: "My hometown is to the east of Zhongshan, with a hill behind it and a sea before it. The soil contains excessive sandstones. The bad soil property makes the land unsuitable for farming. Therefore, most of my fellow villagers travelled hither and thitherto do business. The commercial intercourse enabled my hometown to get prosperous."In the early years of the Republic of China, Villagers from about 100 families inCuiheng Village "engaged in agriculture, industry and commerce in Honolulu". That is to say, the number of villagers who sought a livelihood overseas nearly exceeded those living in Cuiheng Village. The economy of the hometown of overseas Chinese strongly relied on the remittances from the Chinese residing abroad. "80% ~ 90% of the villagers in my native place are in families who rely on overseas remittances." What the overseas Chinese brought back was not only substantial wealth and foreign goods, but also foreign ideas and cultures.
