Zhongshan used to face the sea in the past. People living on boats continuously came to the alluvia plains in the coastal areas at the estuary of the Pearl River from everywhere and were called "Tanka". The salty water songs of Zhongshan are sung with Tanka dialect and passed from one generation to another through oral teaching until today. The songs are divided into several categories, including salty water songs of long and short sentences,Guotong songs, Daaizang songs, Gumui songs, etc. Zhongshan salty water songs are widely influential. He Fuyou, a famous singer of Tanzhou went to Beijing in 1950s, where he sang the songs and met Premier Zhou Enlai. In 2005, Zhongshan salty water songs were included into the first batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China.
