The Yang Jianshan Shrine is one of the ancestral temples of the Yangs in Cuiheng Village, built during Qing Emperor Tongzhi’s reign. The main part has two yards and three bays, and there is a wing room on each side, connected to the main part with two alleys. The whole building is symmetric about the central axis, foursquare and solemn. Yang Jianshan, also known as Tingying or Daxun, was a member of the 19th generation of the Yangs in Cuiheng Village, born in Year 39 of Qing Emperor Qianlong’s reign (1774). He became a candidate for administrator in Year 22 of Qing Emperor Daoguang’s reign, was promoted a third-rank minister in Year 9 of Qing Emperor Xianfeng’s reign (1859), and died in the same year. Yang Jianshan Shien was built as a family ancestral temple, used as Zhongshan County Rural Normal School during the Republician China period, and used as a village auditorium, a grain processing plant, a warehouse, a cowshed, etc. after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Although the roof has collapsed, the frame remains, and some architectural details are well preserved. The original appearance can be seen from its existing structure and classical Cantonese style.
