'Green Seedlings and Respectable Labor' Parent-child Rice-planting Activity of the Experiencing the Farming Life of the Great Man Series Launched at the Museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen

To communicate farming culture, illustrate the importance of agriculture, and introduce people to agricultural knowledge and the hardship of labor, the museum carried out the "Green Seedlings and Respectable Labor" Parent-child Rice-planting Activity, as part of the Experiencing the Farming Life of the Great Man Series, on the morning of August 12, 2023. The event aimed to cultivate youngsters' awareness of respecting labor and cherishing food by engaging them in offering flowers to the bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, visiting the Farming Culture Exhibition Area, planting rice seedlings, etc.

At the ceremony of offering flowers to the bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the museum narrator first gave a description of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s great character. Then the young students laid flowers in front of the statue and bowed three times to pay tribute to and honor the memory of the great man for many generations.

During the visit to the Farming Culture Exhibition Area, the narrator introduced the land where the young Sun Yat-sen used to work and described the adult Sun Yat-sen's contribution to the agriculture of his hometown as well as some of his thoughts on agricultural innovation and reform. The youngsters at the scene all had a better understanding of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's patriotic and hometown-loving character. After that, the narrator explained the usages and mechanisms of traditional farming tools such as windmills, plows with curved beams, and harrows, as well as modern plowing machines. The students learned about the history of farming from the tools and realized the impact of scientific and technological development on agriculture.

At last, the narrator arranged for the children and their parents to plant rice seedlings in designated areas in the field, where Dr. Sun Yat-sen once worked. The students had their feet on the muddy ground and experienced the hard work of rice planting. Some parents said that having their children experience how hard it was to farm was conducive to cultivating their characters of diligence and endurance.
