"Mulberry-Based Fishpond"

This is a form of agricultural production with local characteristics in the Pearl River Delta ("PRD") of Guangdong Province. According to the characteristics of PRD, the local people dig deep into low-lying land in light of the local conditions to create a fishpond, where they raise freshwater fish. The mud is piled up around the fishpond to form the pond foundation that can help reduce flooding. Its mode of production is like this: silkworm sands (dungs) are used to feed the fish and the pond mud is used to fertilize the mulberries.A seamless integration of mulberry growing with the raising of silkworms and fish not onlyforms the virtuous circle ofmutual reliance and promotion of mulberries, silkworms, fish and mud, but also avoid the disadvantage of waterlogging in low-lying land, creating an ideal ecological environment. The practice has received satisfactory economic benefits and reduced environmental pollution. In 1992, mulberry-based fishpond was praised by UNESCO as "a rare fine view with a model of virtuous cyclein the world".
